Course Overview
The Elementary level is a communicative English language course designed by Oxford University (English File 3rd Edition). The course has been supplemented by a variety of communicative and business-related projects to ensure the outcomes of the programme.
The course aims to further develop students’ language skills and strategies in reading, writing, listening and speaking to a level where they can apply their language skills to longer, more complex material and tasks that help build confidence and prepare students to proceed to pre-intermediate level. The course is based on the Common European of Reference for Languages (CEFR) Level A1+.
The course is for those with some knowledge, up to an overall average of IELTS 2.0 minimum/ TOEFL iBT 20 in any of the language skills. The course aims to develop student’ language skills to IELTS band 3 /TOEFL iBT 30 or equivalent (e.g. A2 CEFR).
Objectives
During the course, students will be able to:
Speaking interaction and production objectives
- Communicate in simple and routine tasks on familiar topics and activities.
- Simply describe their family and other people, living conditions, their educational background and their present or most recent job.
Listening objectives
- Understand phrases and common vocabulary on common areas e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, the local area, and employment.
- Understand the main points in short, clear, simple messages and announcements.
Reading Objectives
- Read very short, simple texts.
- Find specific, predictable information in advertisements, prospectuses, menus and timetables.
- Understand short simple personal letters.
Writing Objectives
- Write short, simple notes and messages.
- Write a simple personal letter, for example thanking someone.
Structure and Duration
The course has twelve units where each is carefully designed to develop students’ four main skills reading, listening, speaking and writing. The course also pays good attention to grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation.
Duration
The course duration is 94 guided-learning hours which translates into 10 hours of work per week over approximately 2 months and a half. The course will require around 100 hours of independent study.
Assessment and Grading System
There are regular formative assessments throughout the module and there is a summative test at the end. All assessments are based on the language and skills studied and include:
- Progress Tests (Reading, Vocabulary, Grammar and Structure, Pronunciation, Listening, Writing)
- Weekly writing tasks and quizzes
- End of module Speaking Test
- End of module tests
- Aptis test from British Council
- Participation and Attendance
Certificates
Participants who successfully pass the examinations will receive the international Aptis test certificate from British Council and ESOL certificate from IDEL.
