What is TOLES?

TOLES (Test of Legal English Skills) is a series of specialist legal English language examinations for lawyers, legal translators, law students and other legal professionals. TOLES is one of the most valued and credible legal English exams in the world.

Which organisation offers the TOLES exams?

TOLES is offered by a UK organisation called Global Legal English. They were established in 1999 and they are members of the International Division of the Law Society of England & Wales which regulates the professional standards of solicitors in England. It is the body that gives solicitors a licence to practise law. Now, it is partnered with IDEL to provide these valuable tests in Kurdistan and Iraq.

Why is TOLES necessary?

• TOLES is necessary because law firms, international organisations, companies, and employers require legal English skills and not just general English skills. Even students with excellent general English can find it difficult to understand a contract, amend a contract or write a formal legal letter.
• TOLES was the first international legal English examination. It is the undisputed market leader and has 12 years of proven accuracy.
• Law firms are looking for evidence of good understanding of written contracts, strong drafting skills, accurate writing in legal letters, opinions and emails where vocabulary and style of writing required are quite different and accuracy is of absolute importance. TOLES provides all of that and more.

How many TOLES exams are there?

There are 3 TOLES exams. The exams are called Foundation, Higher and Advanced. Each level has its own preparation course to prepare the candidates for TOLES exam.
