Course Overview
The upper-intermediate level is a communicative English language course designed by Oxford University (English File 3rd Edition). The course has been supplemented by a variety of communicative and business-related projects to ensure the outcomes of the programme.
The course aims to further develop students’ language skills and strategies in reading, writing, listening and speaking to a level where they can apply their language skills to longer, more complex material and tasks that help build confidence and prepare students to proceed to Advanced level.
The course is based on the Common European of Reference for Languages (CEFR) Level B1 – B2. The course is for those with some knowledge, up to an overall average of IELTS 5.0 minimum/ TOEFL iBT 60 in any of the language skills. The course aims to develop student’ language skills to IELTS 7.0 /TOEFL iBT 90 or equivalent (e.g. C1 CEFR).
Objectives
During the course, students will be able to:
Speaking interaction and production objectives
- Speak fluently without searching for language.
- Communicate effectively in social and professional situations.
- Give ideas and opinions and relate their ideas to those of other speakers.
- Talk about complex subjects and develop arguments
Listening objectives
- Understand long and complex speech.
- Understand most television programmes and films.
Reading objectives
- Understand long and complex factual and literary texts, with different styles.
- Understand specialised articles and long technical instructions.
Writing objectives
- Write long, clear, well-structured text to express their points of view.
- Write about complex subjects in a letter, an essay or a report.
- Write in an appropriate style.
Transferable/Key Skills and other attributes
Students will develop the following transferable skills and attributes:
- Extended communication skills in inter-cultural and Higher Education contexts using English as a language for research and participation in oral and written discussion
- Analytical and critical skills to promote effective and efficient information-gathering, processing and presentation using English in different social and academic contexts
- Confident independent-working, managing workloads and working to deadlines
- Reflection on own learning and development and ability to work with, and relate to, others
Structure and Duration
The course has 10 units where each was carefully designed to develop students’ four main skills reading, listening, speaking and writing. The course also pays good attention to grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation.
Duration
The course duration is 120 guided-learning hours which translates into 10 hours of work per week over approximately 3 months. The course will require another 120 hours of independent study.
Assessment and Grading System
There are regular formative assessments throughout the module and there is a summative test at the end. All assessments are based on the language and skills studied and include:
- Progress Tests (Reading, Vocabulary, Grammar and Structure, Pronunciation, Listening, Writing)
- Weekly writing tasks and quizzes
- End of module Speaking Test
- End of module tests
- Aptis Test from British Council
- Participation and Attendance
Certificates
Participants who successfully pass the examinations will receive the international Aptis test Certificate from British Council and ESOL Certificate from IDEL.
